Becoming an Extraordinary Leader: a 12 Step Roadmap for Improving Leadership Skills

Do you want to become a star in your organization's leadership team?  This presentation lays out a 12 step process for improving leadership behavior.  Twelve actionable, practical steps show you how to successfully make that journey.

Description

While thousands of books have been written on the subject of leadership, much less has been written about the process by which one develops their own leadership potential.  This presentation combines research from the Corporate Leadership Council, the Zenger|Folkman organization and other researchers.  It guides serious leaders through a process of development that they can manage, and provides guidance for how the individual can utilize the resources of an organization to assist in this development.

Jack Zenger, author of "The Extraordinary Leader" will provide a 12 step action plan to assist individuals in assessing their leadership competencies.  You will find some of Jack's recommendations in his presentation to include:

  • Understanding the real nature of leadership
  • Obtaining accurate feedback from others
  • Expanding the design of your current role and how to learn from daily work experiences
  • Creating a personal development plan
  • Participating in formal learning and development programs
  • Using new approaches for development
  • Improving daily interactions with people
  • Following up rigorously on commitments for your own development

Book

The Extraordinary Leader: Turning Good Managers into Great Leaders
by John H. Zenger, D.B.A. and Joe Folkman, Ph.D.

For too long, the subject of effective leadership has been shrouded in fog and ambiguity.  The Extraordinary Leader removes the shroud to reveal leadership as a skill, one that can be consciously learned and developed by anyone.  This breakthrough book identifies the competencies necessary for effective leadership, not by guessing or postulating but by analyzing the responses of tens of thousands of workforce members as they describe, in effect, "What makes a great leader?"

Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman - two of today's preeminent leadership experts - analyze the answers and provide a broad and universal model for achieving exceptional results.  They outline the five core competencies that form the basis for successful leadership and detail techniques that include:

  • Methods that top organizations use to develop leaders from within their own ranks
  • Key competencies that leaders must have - and techniques for mastering them
  • Practical steps for developing your own leadership skills

The Extraordinary Leader focuses on the ability - in fact the necessity - for individuals to hone their leadership competencies in multiple areas, and organizations to develop great leaders in as many areas as possible. It provides research-based strategies for strengthening leadership both in individuals and in organizations and, in the process, delivers a solid yet flexible leadership development program that will provide long-term value to virtually any organization.
