The WIT Foundation Offers 10 Scholarships May 1, 2006 - ATLANTA, GA - The WIT Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Women in Technology (WIT), the leading association committed to the development of Georgia's businesswomen in the technology industry, today announced that it will be offering 10 scholarships for middle school-aged girls to attend the CEISMC SummerScape Program at Georgia Tech this summer. Scholarships will be awarded through CEISMC to qualified applicants based on financial need. The CEISMC Program is a unique two-part summer program in science, math and engineering education offered through Georgia Tech to students from elementary to high school-aged. In the middle school program, participants will have the opportunity to either learn about computer animation through a new animation tool from MIT, called "Scratch" or learn about designing and building a hovercraft through cutting-edge experimental software to aid design and physics education. Students are accepted based on multiple academic criteria, including standardized test scores and grades in math and science. "The WIT Foundation is proud to be able to offer the opportunity for deserving young women to take part in such a unique and beneficial program as SummerScape," said Sue Miller, President, WIT Foundation. "We feel this is a wonderful fit with the WIT Foundation's mission to encourage and enable the next generation of women to learn about careers and opportunities in technology and it dovetails with our Girls Get IT program." Through partnerships with Georgia businesses such as the Weather Channel and IBM, Girls Get IT has showcased the types of careers that are available to those who major in math or science. It gives the girls a first hand look at what it's like to work in a company that is dependent on technology, while showing them the different aspects of a variety of "careers in technology". "The CEISMC Program provides a great opportunity for girls to learn about science, engineering and math using software and technology they won't find in their regular classroom," said Anthony Docal, Program Director, CEISMC. "Thanks to the generosity of organizations such as the WIT Foundation, the barrier presented by a lack of financial resources will not stand in the way of letting some deserving students experience the benefits of this program." Through partnerships with Georgia businesses such as the Weather Channel, CISCO, Playmotion!, MARTA, Kaiser Permanente, Home Depot and IBM, Girls Get IT has showcased the types of careers that are available to those who major in math or science. Girls Get IT seeks to show girls different aspects of a variety of careers in technology or careers where technology is a major enabler. For more information, go to www.witinc.org/WITFoundation.
