WIT Announces the Inaugural Recipient of the WIT Foundation Scholarship
Recipient to receive a $20,000, 4-year scholarship to attend Princeton University

June 14, 2007 – ATLANTA, GA - Women in Technology (WIT), the leading association committed to the development of Georgia's businesswomen in the technology industry, announced its first-ever recipient of the WIT Foundation Scholarship during WIT Connect last evening.  The recipient, Janice Tiao, will use the 4-year, non-tuition scholarship worth $20,000 to pursue an education in molecular biology with a certificate program in engineering biology at Princeton University.

"I am so excited to be receiving this scholarship, which I foresee will help me grow and learn on my way into becoming a woman in the workforce and technology.  I've always believed in the ability of women to succeed in the technology, science, math, and engineering fields, and I'm confident that this scholarship will further me on my way there," said Janice Tiao.

Tiao is a 2007 graduate of Wheeler High School and their science and math magnet program.  In addition to core class requirements, magnet program students are required to take 10 additional math and science core classes and four technology electives.  Tiao graduated with a 4.6 GPA and was third in her class of approximately 400 students.  In addition to competing in school athletics, Tiao also showed her leadership through participating in both the Magnet and Wheeler Advisory Boards and the Leadership Club.  She was a member of several honors societies including the Science Honors Society and Mu Alpha Theta.

“We evaluated candidates for this scholarship based on several factors, including need, academic achievement and the candidate’s educational goals,” said Sue Miller, president, WIT Foundation.  “We believe that Janice is a wonderful representation of the type of female student this scholarship was designed to support.  She is gifted, has a passion for technology and science and demonstrates the leadership potential that has set a high bar for applicants going forward.”

The WIT Foundation plans to award one scholarship each year to a graduating female senior who wishes to pursue an education and career in science, technology, engineering or math.  The four-year scholarship awards $5,000 per year to the recipient, for a total award of $20,000.  Information on the scholarship and an application will be posted later this year on the WIT website.
